A friend (who may step forward and identify himself if he wishes) said the other day "ever notice that a lot of drum and bass is just an opportunity to re-use all those crappy M1 pads?" (M1 being Korg M1, a popular digital keyboard, whose factory presets are still splattered on TV Commercials, Porno films, and low rent TV soundtrack music) As a counter example of what D&B can be, check out Amon Tobin (aka Cujo) the EP "Chomp Samba." What I find especially cool about this EP, aside from slamming together sped up latin drumming with hints of the Amen break, is the way that Tobin appropriates the Ed Rush/Nico 'dark/hard' style and gives it a lot more texture and color. It's almost as though the guy listened to Panacea and a bunch of Torque records and said "right then, lets show them how to do it proper." This is the Ninja Tune ZenCDS 53: 1. Chomp Samba 2. Creatures (Hidden Agenda Defocused Mix) 3. Shiny Things* 4. Daytrip *(great use of snare break, great acoustic bass & piano sample) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent
